We examine the effectiveness of the Elephant Learning Platform for teaching mathematics. From 2017-2022, Elephant Learning has had over 140,000 students come through their proprietary math learning system. We analyzed the data within the database to get a large sample of students to determine effectiveness.

29 students in a refugee after school program in Tulsa, OK. Data was analyzed, recommendations for changes to the Elephant Learning system were analyzed and implemented including feedback to teacher about interventions.

The Elephant Learning app assessed Penelope’s math skills using engaging math games. Based on her first few games, the app determined Penelope had the equivalent math skills of a 4-year-old.The app then provided Penelope with math games that were appropriate for her existing math skills, making the playtime easy and fun. As she began to master those math skills, the app began introducing more challenging concepts for her to learn.Along the way, Harlow could log in to Elephant Learning and see the data insights she was so desperately craving. She could see which math concepts Penelope had already mastered, and which ones she was still struggling to learn.That made Harlow’s job easier.

Elephant Learning adjusted the math games for Brooklyn to meet her at her comfort level, which was at the 9-year-old level when she started. Brooklyn didn’t know that her skills were at that age level, but the app did. Brooklyn didn’t need to feel ashamed about being “behind.” Shame is never a healthy motivator, which is why the Elephant Learning statistics are stored where a parent can review them privately.

In addition to helping all three children with their math lessons, Elephant Learning managed to engage even a reluctant learner like Liam. It also alleviated the stress of delivering math lessons to six homeschooled children, for busy mom Stephanie.

When Izy started with Elephant Learning, she was more than five years behind other students her age in terms of understanding mathematics. But in just six short months, she had caught up by an additional 2.4 years! Izy wasn’t just gaining ground in understanding math. Elephant Learning was also restoring her love of school. Her anxiety and frustration over math were disappearing, and she was once again back on track for graduation.

In just six months, Courtney gained over two years’ worth of math and is well on her way to catching up to her peers. Will gained almost four years’ in the same period. With the help of the Math Matters scholarship, the siblings are continuing to improve.

Elephant Learning was what Heather was looking for and exactly what Kaden needed. Gamification provided the differentiation and engagement Kaden required, and the algorithms driving the program ensured that he mastered the four skills he was missing and continued to build on those foundations.

Within six months of playing on Elephant Learning, Chyanne was hooked. More importantly, she was understanding the language of mathematics and rapidly building her skills. In this short time, Chyanne went from being behind most of her peers in terms of mathematical understanding to surpassing many of them.

Emma's eagerness to learn was evident in every other facet of her life. She loves to read and play the piano and is an active community volunteer. Mathematics was the only thing holding her back academically. That kind of damage to a child's self-esteem, though, can be insidious. It can make them question their intelligence and even their capabilities in other areas, which can lead to poor academic results across the board. Learning to "hate" math can exacerbate this problem. Using a gamification approach, Elephant Learning allows students to become excited and engaged by math, which in turn encourages them to keep trying until they understand and find success.

Finding resources for homeschooled children is a challenge for many families. For military families living overseas, however, it can be insurmountable. Four-year-old Amelia and two-year-old Evelyn’s mom joined a small homeschool group on the base. However, most of the children were older, so the shared resources the group offered were not age-appropriate. Their mom also tried to locate local and online resources but found very few were available in English. The girls’ close relationship also posed a bit of a problem when it came to homeschooling. “Amelia has trouble focusing for more than a few minutes at a time,” says mom, “and Evelyn only shows interest when Amelia is doing work with her.”

Cameron’s success with Elephant Learning has confirmed his aunt’s assessment of her nephew’s natural intelligence. It has also accomplished the goal of putting Cameron’s mathematical abilities on par with his peers. Within a few short months, Cameron had mastered necessary mathematical skills and was challenging himself to do more.

After only a month playing on Elephant Learning, Riley was able to boost his understanding of algebraic operations by a year and a half! Merryn was able to improve her ability to do fractions and has learned almost two years of math understanding in two months! Though Riley is no longer playing, Merryn continues to and is starting to tackle exponents and negative numbers. In fact, Merryn’s Elephant Age has surpassed her actual age, meaning she’s beginning to learn math concepts ahead of her class!

Celina progressed from an elephant age of 4.2 years to 8.2 years in about two months! But more importantly, Celina applies what she learns and understands numbers in a way that she couldn’t last month. Her mom adds, “I’m thrilled with the progress that she’s made in such a short period of time. Now I’m going to really start pushing the two older children!”

According to her parents, “Nothing has compared with her experience on Elephant Learning.” Over the month of August, Zara picked up more mathematics concepts than she had on any other platform. After her first test in September, she told her parents, “I don’t know what Elephant Learning did, but look at that!” She passed her first math test in years!

Christina’s tears at math time fueled her mom to find anything that would help. She realized her daughter wanted to excel past the frustration and anxiety and finally learn mathematics. After reading reviews and case studies about the success that other students with learning disabilities had on Elephant Learning, Christina’s mom decided to sign her up.

To their mom’s surprise, all the kids loved playing on Elephant Learning. The games were intriguing and attention-grabbing. Mabel, who struggled retaining new concepts was having more “aha” moments. Concepts were clicking faster and easier. All along, Abner and Zoya were finding it easier to read and understand math without their dyslexia reducing their performance. The game structure meant less reading math problems, and more hearing them for Abner. On the other hand, number visualization helped reduce number errors for Zoya.

Over time, Connor has learned coping skills to study without stress. He plays on Elephant Learning frequently and learns quickly while his parents enjoy watching him excel academically.

Being diagnosed with ADHD, depression, and general anxiety disorder is a lot to take on as a kid. John’s mom did whatever she could to support her son, especially in school. She decided to pull him from the traditional setting to give him extra attention through homeschool. However, the transition was challenging. John’s mom felt ill-equipped to teach mathematics. Plus, she struggled to find the correct balance of medications that would help John focus while learning. On top of trying to manage four other kids, the situation was incredibly stressful. Everything seemed hopeless to help John live up to the amazing potential she knew her son had.

Alana loves math, so when her parents signed her up for Elephant Learning she immediately loved the program. It has piqued her interest and gives her feedback on where she can grow. Learning at her own pace helps caters to her individual needs and allows her to enjoy school with ease. Her younger brother even loves learning more math and playing with his sister!

To Alyssa’s relief, Jacy “Loves the selection of games, especially the ones with her favorite animals.” Jacy’s tears at math time stopped. Kyle’s first assessment indicated what his mom already knew — Kyle was below grade level in his mathematic abilities. But within a month’s time, he advanced to his actual age plus a few years! The whole family is excited for Kyle to return to school with more confidence and mathematics knowledge!

Playing three days a week for a few weeks boosted Hailee’s mathematics understanding. She is happily closing the mathematics gap — without the anger or anxiety. Her mom adds, “She no longer hates math. When I ask her to get her math finished, she says OK!”

“Charlie and Victoria’s comprehension of math increased tremendously,” says their mom. Playing on Elephant Learning five days a week for several weeks filled in their knowledge gaps. Both kids are on the road to mathematic success at their new school.

Dillon’s math skills went from basic addition to complex word problems for children his age. Now, math is his favorite subject, and it has made teaching math so much easier and enjoyable for Alise.

Now, Kaelyb is using the Elephant Learning app five days a week for as much as an hour per day, logging in first thing in the morning. He loves all the games and challenges himself to dedicate as much time as possible to the app, playing on it every day instead of just the recommended three times per week. Nicole loves the app because, while Kaelyb is having a fun time playing games and learning math concepts, she’s receiving charts that give her a good indication of his struggle areas so she can then personally work with him on those concepts.
